I will openly admit that I purchased bottled water for many years.

My tap water tasted terrible so I started to buy bottles without really thinking about what I was doing. Years later, reports of bottled water started surfacing about quality, and potential dangers lurking in the bottles. I was really intrigued by the problem and I found a lot of information that was not pleasant. Many of the bottles being sold today are actually no better than the water that comes out of your tap. I just thought that if it tasted better, than it was better. Bottled water, turns out is actually monitored by the FDA and not the EPA, which governs tap water quality. The EPA is much stricter on its health and legal limits of contaminants than the FDA. The main criteria for bottling water is that it needs to be equal to tap water, but it doesn't have to be better. Besides all of the concerns with the plastic and where the actual water comes from, two other big factors are cost to the consumer and to the environment. I looked into how much I was spending on bottled water in the past and it turns out that I was spending about $40 a month just for drinking water, not for cooking, ice, or anything else. I also estimated that I was throwing away over 130 bottles a month right into the trash! It really made me think of how one person can have such a HUGE impact on the environment. For many years now I have been filtering my tap water, both in the kitchen and in the shower. I went from spending almost $500 a year on bottled water to spending just under $90 for filters annually. Tap water issues seem to be coming up more and more nowadays.

Pharmaceuticals found in municipal tap water supplies is the latest news to come out. It turns out that our bodies do not absorb all of the medication when people take them. Those medicines are then excreted from the body and enter the sewage system. That water is recycled and sent out once again as "Tap Water" that you use in your home for cooking, drinking, and everything else. Unfortunetly, the municipal water treatment facilities are not equipped to handle many of the impurites and contaminants that end up in our water supplies. Read your local water quality report, which you can find on EPA.gov, to see what the concerns are in your area. Here in Florida, chlorine and ammonia, which are used to disinfect the water, are at levels that warrant concern. I recommend that everybody look into water filtration for their homes. It is too risky nowadays to not research your water quality and see if steps need to be taken to clean it up.
